Sale Poetry Trail

Poetry Trail_edited.jpg

For anyone with an interest in poetry, why not take part in Sale Festival's Poetry Trail? We've invited the people of Sale to send us their wonderful words, poignant poems and riveting rhymes, and a number of local businesses have agreed to display these in their shop windows for the whole community to enjoy! We'll be listing the venues along with which poems they're displaying so that you can pay them a visit, or simply enjoy some random poem-spotting as you wander around during festival month! At the end of the festival, we'll publish everything in an online anthology so that you can continue to enjoy this for the rest of the year.

Details on how to enter are included in the guidline below along with entry form links at the bottom of each age category.

Guidelines for Sale Poetry Trail – Under 18

1.    Eligibility
The poetry trail is open to anyone aged under 18 years of age. Entrants do not have to come from, or currently live in Sale to take part.
2.    Submission Guidelines
•    Each entrant may submit up to five original poems.
•    Poems must be the original work of the entrant and entrant must own the rights to the work.
•    Submissions must be written in English.
•    Poems should be typed and submitted electronically via the entry form, or written and sent as an attachment
•    Any entrant under the age of 14 should have the permission of a parent or guardian, and this should be included as part of their entry form.
3.    Theme
The poetry trail does not have a specific theme, so poets may submit works on any subject of their choice. Poetry is an expressive art where writers are welcome to convey their personal thoughts, views and experiences through the written and spoken word.
However, please be mindful that the intention is to display some of the poetry in community spaces such as shop windows and an online, accessible anthology.
Therefore the subject and content of poems should not contain anything that could be viewed as offensive, harmful or disrespectful to any specific groups, organisations or denominations, or contain language which may be classed as explicit.
4.    Poem length
Entries should generally be kept to a maximum of 40 lines for reading and displaying purposes.
5.    Deadline
Submissions must be received by Sunday 26 May. Late entries may not be considered.
6.    Judging Criteria
We believe that poetry should be inclusive, so are seeking entrants of all abilities to take part in the Poetry Trail. Therefore entries will not be “judged” as such, as there isn’t a specific type or style or structure that we’re looking for. Whilst we will be limited in the number of poems that we can display in our community spaces, the efforts of all entrants (being mindful of submission guidelines, and the points in section 3: Theme) will be considered.
7.    Publication
By submitting entries to the Poetry Trail, entrants agree that their work, if selected, will be displayed in public community spaces (e.g. shop/café windows) and published in an online anthology. The author retains the copyright to their work at all times.
Entrants may request withdrawal of any of their work at any stage during the Poetry Trail. For example, if a publisher intended to publish the entrant’s work and requested exclusivity of publishing rights, and it was felt that displaying work as part of the Poetry Trail would contravene this exclusivity.
8.    Anonymity of work
Any poem selected for display will be credited to the author in the display, and credited in the online anthology unless the author has chosen to remain anonymous.
9.    Prizes
We want the entry process to feel inclusive and open to all abilities, so the winners of any prizes will be chosen at random rather than win based on traditional evaluation/judging of their poem(s).
There is no cash alternative to the prizes.
10.    Notification
You (or your parent or guardian) will be notified by email if we intend to display and/or publish your poem. We will endeavour to notify you of the venue where it will be displayed, although please be aware that the venue may change depending on availability of location. The location of your poem may also be printed on literature advertising the Poetry Trail, or the Sale Festival website.
11.    Code of Conduct
Poetry should be inclusive and welcoming to all in our community, so work containing intentionally offensive content will not be considered. This includes any language which could be considered racist, homophobic, ableist, transphobic, misogynistic, or any language which incites hatred or animosity towards a particular sector or group in society. This list is an example and is not intended to be exhaustive.
12.    Discretion of Organisers:
The Poetry Trail organisers reserve the right to amend the guidelines, extend deadlines, or make other necessary changes at their discretion.
13.    Entry Fee:
In the interests of inclusivity and accessibility, it is free of charge to submit an entry to the Poetry Trail for consideration. If you (or your parent or guardian) receive any email/social media communications asking for an entry fee in relation to submitting your work then please let us know as soon as possible at salepoetrytrail@gmail.com
All entrants are encouraged to carefully read and adhere to these guidelines before submitting their entries.
If you have any questions, comments or issues then please get in touch with us at salepoetrytrail@gmail.com
